Summary
This book examines Frank Lloyd Wright's design of four concrete block houses in Los Angeles, 1923-25, and his design of the Barnsdall house of 1919-21. The development of concrete as a building material is introduced, as is Wright's application of it from the 1890s to around 1920. The next section examines why Wright began to use concrete blocks, his first designs, and his possible inspirations. The physical and aesthetic properties of his concrete blocks are studied, and final sections place the buildings within the context of contemporary theories of architecture and study the resurgence of modernism in 1923, led by former Wright employees Rudolph Schindler and Richard Neutra.
