Summary

The Godolphin Arabian is Alex de Jonge's immensely readable translation of French author Eugene Sue's tale. It is a riveting story for horse lovers of all ages. Marguerite Henry's classic King of the Wind was based on this very book. The Godolphin Arabian (1724-1753) was the third and last of the foundation sires of the Thoroughbred racehorse. It was he that produced the flat, sloping shoulder of the modern Thoroughbred, permitting reach and extension of stride possessed by no other breed of horse before or since. This great stallion's latter years in England have been documented. How he came to France from the Middle East and subsequently made his way to England is a matter of legend. In 1839, mixing fact and legend, Eugene Sue re-created the life of the Godolphin Arabian and his constant companion, Grimalkin the cat, to give us this wonderful story of adversity and triumph.
