Summary

The Orvis Guide to Small Stream Fly Fishing gives the angler a guide to finding and fishing the unspoiled gems found everywhere from wilderness areas to suburban backyards--yet often are ignored by most fly fishers. This beautifully illustrated and definitive resource explains the small stream environment, how to find these streams, how small-stream trout behave, how to read the water, special casts, fly selection, and how to present the fly in all types of small streams. Many fly fishers may not have the disposable income to pursue their passion in Argentina or New Zealand, and may not fly from one coast to another for a fishing trip. As more fishing is done close to home, small trout streams, or third-order streams as described by hydrologists, are thirty times as abundant as the bigger, more famous trout streams that are written about in most books and magazine articles. Most of these streams are on public land, thus making them accessible to everyone. Tired of big trout streams crowded with boat traffic and other anglers, today's fly fishers have a greater desire to get closer to nature in solitude, which is typical in small, unknown streams. In addition, most small-stream trout are wild, not raised in hatcheries, And The greater emphasis on wild trout today makes these fish that much more appealing. There are thousands of books on fly fishing. Fly fishers are serious readers, and they love to collect and use reference books. There are hundreds of books on fly tying in print, and more than 50 books on fly fishing in saltwater alone. In contrast, there are only four books on small-stream trout fishing, even though 80% of the fly-fishing market is still trout-oriented and there are myriads more opportunities for small-stream fly fishing than for saltwater fly fishing, which for most people requires considerable travel And The expense of hiring a guide and a boat. Clearly, The market for fly-fishing books on small-stream fishing is underserved.
