Jenny Uglow's latest book is The Lunar Men which won Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History. Her biography of William Hogarth was published in September 1997 and was shortlisted for the Whitbread Biography Award. She writes and reviews for, amongst other publications, the Guardian, the Times Literary Supplement and the Independent on Sunday.

Maggy Hendry grew up in Scotland and was educated in St Andrews and at the University of Kent. She is a freelance writer working in educational and encyclopedic publishing. She became interested in the lives and struggles of third world women through working in West Africa and travelling in India, and she worked for a time in a London-based information exchange for women worldwide. She is currently writing a novel set in East Africa in the 19th century. She has two grown up children and now lives in Kent.
