Summary

European tradition meets California informality and globe-trekker chicFrom stateside townhomes in New York, beach houses in the Hamptons and Malibu, and ranch homes in California to farmhouses in the English countryside and Southwest France, this collection of Kathryn Ireland's interiors moves up and down the sliding scale of formality. As Timeless Interiors demonstrates, a Kathryn Ireland-designed space, no matter how playful and unorthodox, is always inviting and livable. As her fabric design business thrived and expanded, so her interior style began to incorporate elements of from her expansive travels-paisleys, ikats, and madras- taking on a lively globe-trekker chic appeal. This mid-career report card showcases rooms and residences that Kathryn designed last week and as far back as 20 years ago. Even her earliest installations are aging extremely well, like a good Bordeaux.

Excerpts

It was while I was renovating the Libby Ranch in Ojai that I got a call from Victoria Jackson. She invited me to come and see the property that she had just bought. I thought before visiting her ranch she should visit mine. She remarked that unlike the Wallace Neff masterpiece, her house was all about the view and the landscape whereas mine was all about the interiors.

Without doubt, this property is one of the most spectacular I've seen. On one side are the majestic views of the Santa Barbara mountain ranch, on the opposite side is the Pacific Ocean, and in the distance is the landscape of Santa Barbara and its surrounds. For being as close to Los Angeles as the property lies, its truly paradise.

I was not put off by the fact that the main residence was an early nineties nondescript horseshoe-shaped house that lies at the summit. There was great space, but the flow to the house somehow didn't work. My brief from Victoria was to do what I wanted.
